My Story: Navigating Two Worlds

Hi there! I’m Rafael Cazares, LMFT.

As a Mexican-American professional, son of immigrants, first-gen graduate, partner, and parent, my practice is built around one core truth: You can deeply honor where you came from while updating outdated expectations around stress, duty, and success so they actually fit the life you are building today.

Growing up, I navigated the space between traditional cultural expectations and carving out my own path. Living through these shifts alongside the daily realities and heavy responsibilities of family life as a partner and parent keeps me steady in the messiness of real life.

I know firsthand what it feels like to carry the quiet weight of needing to "get it right," to feel disconnected under all the pressure, and to realize that the scripts you've been following for years are leaving you exhausted.

Whether you are navigating major life transitions, identity shifts, or long-standing relationship loops, I bring my genuine self, direct honesty, and real warmth into every session.

How I Work

My perspective is rooted in a systemic Marriage and Family Therapy foundation. I don't look at your anxiety, burnout, or relationship friction in isolation. Instead, we look at the whole picture: how your background, daily environment, current demands, and relational habits all connect.

Real growth isn't about placing blame. It is about deciding how you want to show up going forward.

Therapy with me is an active, collaborative space focused on real relief:

  • Stepping out of self-protection mode: When you feel overwhelmed or misunderstood, it is natural to default to old survival moves, like pulling away, over-explaining, or trying to manage everything yourself. We look at what is driving those knee-jerk reactions so you can stop reacting on defense and feel steady in your connections.

  • Stopping the fight with your own thoughts: We help you unhook from overthinking, quiet a severe inner critic, and drop constant busyness as a shield so you can make choices aligned with what actually matters to you.

  • Processing heavy past experiences: We safely process distressing memories and long-standing baggage so old experiences stop dictating how you react to your life today.

To support this work, my clinical approach integrates evidence-based frameworks including Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), and EMDR.

Backed by specialized training through Postpartum Support International (PSI) and relational frameworks (Gottman Method and EFCT), I also bring dedicated care to individuals navigating early parenthood, fatherhood, or shifting family dynamics.
